Huge drill cuts Virgin fiber cable. Thousand customers without weekend TV and internet. Severed fiber optic cables have caused up to a thousand customers of Virgin Media in Shoreditch and Hackney in London to be left without broadband internet and cable television this weekend. Engineers believe the total loss of service, which continues to be down this Saturday evening, is unlikely to be fixed until Sunday lunchtime at the earliest. The damage to a primary cable carrying 96 fiber optic cables including some belonging to the EE mobile network was said to have been caused by a huge drilling rig on a nearby construction site where a new block of flats is being built. An engineer working on the drilling site claimed they had not 'drilled through the cable'. 'We damaged the cable' he said. He then demanded we delete images of the offending drilling rig. Technicians working on behalf of Virgin Media were working hard to replace the damaged cables. Virgin Media press office did not respond to repeated requests to speak with them for comment today.
